First there was rocks, then came humans, then humans hit the rocks and everybody danced. At least that's what I got told by my teacher. Well the only teacher I would actually listen to completely, my Drum teacher of course!
Since those first humans decided to keep bashing on that stone we have started to create, and build upon others creations having been inspired.
Inspiration doesn't always come first though, it may come after you have been practicing for a while and that is i believe because freedom of expression is achieved after your muscles and mind have first been trained.
Learn the rules so you can break them, understand that some principles are aligned to the realty ofthe physics of the world we live in. Gravity does apply to you!
However once you can play, say single stroke rolls evenly as taught with control, you can then start to create, and boy does that feel good. and then you can start to understand the process and start to learn something else through dedicated practice, so you can start to give it that uniqueness that is you.
So, if you are new to playing the drums, stick with it! (pun intended) Focus on the practice and the results will come!
And then you are in the beautiful process of learning and creating!
